The inspiration for this site came from multiple sources. I wanted to start a blog that shared information about traditional food but I did not want to limit this to only food that is considered “Paleo”. I find labels to be restrictive and I wanted the content of this website to emphasize food that is nutritionally dense, not necessarily limited to what a cave dweller would hunt or forage.
In the past 5 years I have learned a lot about food. My heightened awareness for REAL food started about 5 years ago when I moved to South Korea. There I was introduced to many strange but interesting types of food. The most influential food for me was kimchi. One cannot talk about Korean culture without discussing kimchi. It is a type of fermented cabbage that Koreans consume with every meal. To be honest, I didn’t care for it at first. I thought it smelled kind of funky, and it is very spicy. (The taste is somewhat acquired). However, I certainly acquired it and now I absolutely love kimchi. I learned how to make it myself, and I consume it regularly. My two year old daughter eats it too!
Cultured (fermented) foods have been in the news a lot recently, and with good reason. The good bacteria, called probiotics, may be the key to healing many chronic digestive illnesses people suffer from today, (such as IBS and Crohn’s), and recent research has shown that some species of bacteria may even reverse peanut allergies. The more I read about cultured food, the more I am convinced that it will be the key to reverse a lot of the damage that has been done to the health of Americans by the SAD (Standard American Diet), and the overuse of prescription drugs, (especially antibiotics).
It has been difficult for me to come up with a name for a blog that represented the importance of eating non-processed foods as well as the health benefits of cultured foods. In fact, I found the process somewhat agonizing. The original website name, The Cultured Cave, was my first attempt to incorporate these ideas into the title of a website. The cave part of the title is also a “play on words.” It represents not only a return to eating food that is more “paleo” in nature, but it is also a reference to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. The past 5 years have been a journey for me, a sort of awakening. I feel as if I was chained to a rock in Plato’s cave for most of my life, seeing only the shadows, (which represent the marketing of the large food corporations). It is not an easy process, to break those chains. The spark that lights the fire is different for everyone. For me, getting pregnant was the incentive I needed to really clean up my act, (and my food cabinets).
I decided to change the name of my blog because I needed a name that was more diverse in nature. My recent experiences as a “second-time” mom has directed my focus towards motherhood. As much as I LOVE cultured food, it is only a small, (yet important) part of my “natural mommy” journey.
If you are reading this now, chances are you are on a similar journey. Hopefully you are not in the middle of a health crisis, but if you are, there is hope. Our health is not determined only by genetics. There is an emerging field of biology called epigenetics, a branch of biology that studies how environmental factors can affect the expression of genes. We do have some control over our health, but it takes discipline and vigilance. The human body can heal, but it needs the proper tools to do this.
