Mosquito Bite Relief

Mosquitoes are some of the most annoying critters on the planet. I used to suffer for days after being bit by them. It is hard to find relief for the itching, and the swelling. Once, when I was a kid, I was bitten on my eyelid and my eye swelled up so much it was difficult to see! There wasn’t much I could do about it either. Icing it helped a little. Benadryl helped, sometimes, but it made me incredibly drowsy, (sometimes it knocked me out for hours). The itching ,eek. Witch hazel helped a little, but not much. Even…

Kombucha

This flavorful fizzy drink has become popular, even outside the small circle of “real foodies”. What is it? It is Kombucha. If you are trying to break the habit of drinking soda while improving your health this is a good choice for you. Though I made poor food and drink choices in my younger days, soda consumption was not one of them. Sure, I drank soda on occasion, but I never suffered from a soda addiction. (Gratefully). Honestly, it made me feel very bloated so I avoided it. Apparently, some people have a very difficult time breaking the habit of…

Stomach Flu Prevention and Natural Remedies

I know, it’s not really “the flu”, but people call it the stomach flu. The more proper term is gastroenteritis. It’s not fun to watch your kid puke, and even less fun to clean it up. Fortunately there are natural ways to prevent it, and natural remedies that can help recovery. (Note: this post is not intended to be medical advice, always defer to your doctor for medical treatment). Prevention – Probiotics This is my top pick for preventing the stomach flu. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Probiotic bacteria are “good bacteria” that we WANT to…

Coffee Maker Hack

I love the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning. Coffee is such a life saver for me, especially when I have been up too late writing blog posts or reading, which seems like a lot lately. I love coffee. You know what I don’t love? Running a vinegar rinse through the coffee maker to clean out mineral deposits. If you live in a place that has hard water, you know what I am talking about. You know it is time to do a “coffee pot cleaning” when your aromatic brew has been reduced to a mere trickle. Not…

Easy Homemade Yogurt

I figured out how to make homemade yogurt, without a packet of starter culture or a yogurt maker. I am pretty excited because this is saving me money. Healthy food is expensive. I truly believe in paying the farmer instead of the doctor, but ouch, it can be hard on the wallet. I have grown vegetables, joined a CSA, and preserved food, but the food budget is still pretty high. Cultured foods, when store bought, can be pricey. (A 16 ounce jar of sauerkraut costs almost ten dollars). So I started to focus my efforts on making cultured foods, since…

How To Naturally Heal Tooth Trauma

What can you do if your child suffers trauma to a tooth and it turns grey? Many will say there is nothing you can do about it. That has not been my experience. Last year, my daughter slipped and fell in the bathroom. She hit her tooth on the lid of a garbage pail. The tooth suffered some trauma, but it was not chipped or broken. It looked a little bruised at the gumline though. In that moment I was so grateful for homeopathy. Seriously. What else can you use in a situation like this? I gave her one dose…

Plastic Free Shopping

South Korean grocery stores have a great system in place. Customers use re-usable shopping bags, but for larger orders there are boxes available for free. In the front of the store, just past the checkout point, there are large tables set up with boxes folded and stacked. (The boxes are from store deliveries). There is also packing tape available. The customer boxes up groceries, no plastic bags needed. I was impressed by the Korean system. Of course the best way to reduce waste is to bring your own bags. I have tried out a few different types, but this is…
