Dehydrated Baby Food

I have been preparing for a train trip across the country. I plan on packing a cooler for the train ride, (to save money and to at least start the trip off with nutritional food). I was faced with a dilemma for my 8 month old daughter. I can pack some hard boiled eggs for her and scoop out the yolk, and make homemade pureed baby food that I can keep cold for the first 7 hours. But the train ride is over 24 hours long! At home I like to feed her grated frozen liver, runny egg yolks, and…

Preserving Sweet Cherries

Last year I did an experiment. I bought a 10 pound box of cherries through the CSA I belong too. I knew I would not consume 10 lbs of cherries in 5 days, so I would have to freeze them or dehydrate them. I of course had never done this before, but it’s a lot more fun to jump into the fire, right? Fortunately, I at least had the foresight to do a little bit of research and buy a cherry pitter before I picked up the big box of cherries. (Amazon Prime really saved the day with the 2…

Freezing Strawberries

Yesterday I read that the Listeria outbreak has expanded yet again, to more frozen produce. The timing could not be worse for me because I am 23 weeks pregnant right now. (Listeria is an even greater concern during pregnancy, it can cause complications). I had been enjoying the occasional smoothie, to ensure I get a lot of the nutrients I need. (Plus it is getting HOT ). So this recent Listeria hysteria is another reminder of why I am learning to grow and preserve food. The old adage is true, if you want something done right you have to do it…

Freezing the Harvest

It is January, just a few days into the New Year and I am already missing the fresh produce that went straight from our garden to our table. Earlier this evening I rummaged through the freezer looking for a package of sour cream culture. I never did find the culture but I did find a few packages of sweet corn that I froze this past summer, (during the peak of harvest season). Tomorrow I plan on cooking it to have with crock pot barbecue chicken. I am pretty excited for dinner, (a rarity these days, lately I have been stuck in a…

Apple Chips

It’s apple season, and I finally got to go apple picking this past weekend. (I didn’t have any luck finding a good place to go apple picking when we lived in South Korea). We had a great time! We ended up with two bags of apples. I wanted to preserve as many as possible. Why bother preserving them? I read a very interesting article written by Kristen, the Food Renegade that disclosed the truth about the apples you buy at the grocery store. Apparently the average supermarket apple is 14 months old. Yuck. Apples are treated with chemicals to keep them…
